Travel in Japan and South Korea can be a little bit tricky when it comes to your mobile phone.
You have to make sure that your handset will work on the mobile networks.
You will need a phone that supports 3G. Not all 3G phones will work however.
Your handset MUST support W-CDMA (2.1GHz).
Look at your phones specification documents. They can be found online if you have thrown away the box.
You are looking at the supported networks information and it needs to show that your phone will work on the type of 3G networks in Japan and South Korea.
Phone specification documents will display this in different ways:
3G: UMTS 2100
3G: 2100 WCDMA
3G: UMTS 850 / 2100
3G: HSDPA 850 / 2100
To be sure your phone works in Japan you can check the Japan roaming partner web site:

This list may not be complete and other phones may work.
